2009-2010 Huskermat Overview
Wrestling in Nebraska from HuskerMat
Welcome to the 2009-10 High School and College wrestling season! This year marks the 10th year Huskermat has been covering wrestling across Nebraska in depth. For those unfamiliar with the format of our season-long coverage format, this should help introduce you to how what we do and how we do it. Huskermat provides a unique coverage of the sport in the state that you simply cannot get anywhere else. From in-depth season previews, rankings, predictions and analysis, we fill a niche that you won't find in your local newspaper or media outlet. Combined with our wildly popular message boards, weekly streaming shows (Co-Hosted by Millard South Head Coach Doug Denson) and live tournament coverage, Huskermat is the ultimate fan resource, whether you're a parent or an avid follower of the sport.

In some ways, the season is already in full swing with colleges preparing for opening tournaments next weekend (and as football season winds down for high schools things will really get rolling). In reality, the sport has evolved where for many, there is no such thing as an offseason anymore. The high school season may end in February, but offseason tournaments carry us through the spring and the end of July with the Cadet/Junior nationals. We will begin our live broadcasting the first week of November with our college preview show and will work our way towards the start of the high school season with preview releases and our annual High School Kickoff show.

Not only is this is a special season for Huskermat but it is also a special season for the state of Nebraska as a whole. While we focus primarily on High School wrestling, the incredible success of Nebraska, UNO, UNK, Chadron, Dana College and our other in-state schools means we definitely give those schools the attention they deserve. The City of Omaha will host both the Division II and Division I championships on back to back weekends in March. This on the heels of Council Bluffs hosting the World Team Trials this past season. What's it all mean? It's a great opportunity to see some of the best wrestlers in the sport up close and personal.

One thing I've learned over the course of time is that you can never tell exactly what big stories are going to evolve during the season until they actually happen. Certainly in Class A all eyes will be on what appears to be a once in a generation Grand Island team that could set records that may never be broken again. In Class B, Omaha Skutt will almost certainly continue their dominating run of championships that began back in the late 1990s. Class C looks like the most interesting team race on paper with defending champion Central City battling traditional powers Mitchell, Madison and Sargent/Burwell among others. Class D should be another battle between top programs Amherst and Howells. Individually, some of the best talent in the country resides right here in Nebraska. All the while, I'll be keeping an eye on the upcoming talent in this year's 8th grade class, which as a whole looks as good on paper as I've seen in a very long time.

This year we will also be adding a new twist to the technology side as you will now be able to follow Huskermat on the popular Twitter website. Check us out at www.twitter.com/huskermat and follow us for remote updates throughout the season. Twitter has the possibility to revolutionize how we communicate and relay results and information while we're remote. With the ability to receive Twitter messages directly as SMS texts to your phone, it gives us an even better opportunity to send you breaking news, results and updates throughout the season. I think you will really be missing out as the season gets going and we're sending messages directly from tournaments we're covering.

As usual, here's a high level overview of the upcoming season features you can look forward to as a member of the Huskermat Insiders:

Again, thank you for all the support of the website-some of you have been with us since we started this venture way back before the age of streaming webcasts, Twitter and the name Huskermat! A special thank you goes to my good friend Mike Fleshman who has had his own battle to fight this year but has continued to be an invaluable contributor to the website (thanks Mike I could never do this on my own!).

Sincerely,
Ross Halford
